Cable car planned for the Drakensberg Mountains
January 30, 2014
A cable car is in the planning for the Drakensberg. The Drakensberg cable car is planned to rival that on Table Mountain and has been mooted a “game changer” tourism project for KwaZulu-Natal’s uKhahlamba Drakensberg World Heritage Park.
The preferred site is in the Mnweni Valley next to the Royal Natal National Park section of the World Heritage Site, with the base station near Woodstock Dam. The summit station would be in Lesotho, at a height almost three times that of Table Mountain, and the cable length would be 3km.
Clearly such a project will be a tourist attraction but there is considerable critism ranging from envionmental to impossible business models. For now the investigation phase of developing the 3 300m cableway with an intermediate station, climbing 1 300m to the summit, which will be an elevation of 3 300m above sea level offering expansive views of KwaZulu Natal, Lesotho and Free State.
An attraction like this could create more than 1000 jobs and increased oppertunities for small business providers. And this would make the Mweni area of the Drakensberg a more attractive destination which would be a blessing considering how badly it needs development.
